How We Price Our Artwork

There are many methods artists use to price their artwork. Creating artwork isn’t cheap. There are expensive materials to take into consideration such as materials, equipment, and studio space to take into account. The U.S. Department of Labor lists the average hourly wage for a fine artist as $24.58. In comparison, that works out to approximately $33 CDN.

On average, our paintings take approximately 10-15 hours to complete, some longer depending on the complexity and composition of the painting. Some people may argue that when you are just starting out, something might take you much longer than a master in your field. On the other hand, when you have mastered a discipline, it might take you a much shorter time to complete a work but you will also be able to demand a much higher price for it.

With that in mind, factoring in the lowest amount of hours multiplied by the hourly wage would ballpark around $330. Taking into consideration that this figure only represents the hourly wage and not factoring in the cost of supplies, which would further elevate the cost, we feel that a sizing formula (Square Inch × Creative Fee) offers the buyer both consistency and fairness for our work. As we are working on building our online name and brand, we want our artwork to be both reasonable and affordable to our clients.

Square Inch x Dollar Amount Formula

To get the square inches of a painting, multiply the width of the canvas by the length.

Most artists will start off with a $2-$3 per square inch (creative fee) price when selling online or at outdoor art festivals and increase their Creative Fee once they start working with galleries to upwards of $7 per square inch.

Length x Width x Creative Fee + Cost* (Frame) = Price

*Framing is at the option of the client.
